Auden’s col High Altitude Trek

Gangotri Valley to Kedar Valley

Auden’s Col Trek is an adventurous journey that commences from Gangotri at an elevation of 3,048 meters, a significant Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the holiest river in India. From Gangotri, the trail leads to Nala Camp, covering 8 kilometers of easy terrain. The scenic walk through a Pine and Birch forest transforms into a delightful journey with views of Himalayan peaks such as Jogin and the Kedartal range.

Continuing from Nala Camp, the trail progresses to Rudragaira Base Camp, an additional 7-8 kilometers of gradual ascent. The route then turns towards the base of the Gangotri group of peaks, leading to Auden’s Col and passing through glaciated tracks. From Auden’s Col, the trek proceeds to Khatling Glacier and further to Chowki, a high-altitude meadow.

From Chowki, the path heads to Masar Tal and then to Vasuki Tal, two high-altitude lakes in the Garhwal Himalayan region. After Vasuki Tal, an 8-kilometer downhill trail leads to Kedarnath, another significant Hindu pilgrimage site and the remotest location of the Char Dham Yatra. The Auden’s Col Trek concludes at Rishikesh, which can be reached via Gaurikund, Rudraprayag, and Devprayag, providing trekkers with a diverse and challenging expedition through the stunning landscapes of the Garhwal Himalayas.

Start Point  : Joshimath, End Point : Rudrapryag

Upon arrival in Gangotri, a revered religious site and one of the Char Dhams, you’re greeted by the serene Bhagirathi River. April to November sees pilgrims and tourists, both local and foreign. Rest in your hotel and explore the market tomorrow.
After breakfast, visit the Pandav Gufa (Cave), Gauri Kund, and Surya Kund nearby. After lunch, choose to explore Gangotri Temple or go shopping. Have lunch at a restaurant or rest house, then stay at a guest house or rest house for paperwork.
After acclimating in Gangotri, begin the trek towards Nala Camp, which takes 6-7 hours through moderate trails. Start by descending the main valley and trekking along the Bhagirathi River. After an hour, cross a log bridge and turn right into Rudragaira Valley. Trek through dense pine, cedar, rhododendron, and birch forests.
Carefully navigate stream and landslide crossings as the trail steepens and snow patches appear. Despite challenges, enjoy stunning views of Rudragaira Peak, Jogin Peak, and Auden’s Col. Rest in your tents at Rudragaira Camp after a strenuous day.
Today promises excitement and surprises. Begin trekking on moraines, crossing a landslide area to reach the top of the ridge. Walk on the ridge and descend to Bakriwala Camp. After crossing a stream, navigate a flat ridge for over an hour, careful of loose scree.
Climb down to Gangotri III Base Camp and be greeted by Sukha Taal, a surprise on the trek. The base camp sits on a flat moraine surface, offering views of the gully leading to Auden’s Col.
Today marks the longest, toughest, and most exquisite trek. Your hopes of crossing Auden’s Col will be realized. The flat ground ahead serves as an advanced camping site. The ascent requires roping up. Jogin and Gangotri peaks flank the stunning Auden’s Col.
Today, navigate a steep 50-meter descent on a snow-covered trail. Continue down the glacier for 2 km to reach moraines. The path, filled with loose rocks and scree, exposes you to black ice, icefalls, and large ice formations. Maneuver through crevasses, reaching the Bhilangna River’s source at Khatling Glacier’s snout.
Enjoy a pleasant trek through meadows along the valley for 3 km. Cross a wooden bridge over the fierce Bhilangna River and relax in lush meadows. Continue another 4 km to reach Chowki campsite, set on vast grasslands amidst towering peaks.
Gain a little height today to reach the crystal-clear Machhar Tal. Enjoy rejuvenating views of Thalay Sagar Peak. Start with a small ascent, crossing ridges and a stream. Arrive at the stunning lake, reflecting the surrounding scenery. Camp beside Machhar Tal for a serene experience.
Embark on a long trek on a mostly flat, gradual trail. Cross easier crevasses compared to Khatling. At the pass’s top, feel victorious, then begin the steep, boulder-strewn descent. Spot the Peenya Tal twin lakes before continuing to Vasuki Tal.
On the last day of the trek, board your vehicle for the return journey. Collect cherished memories and reflect on your adventure. Promise to come back again, carrying the spirit of the journey with you.
