Panpatia Col High Altitude Trek

Challenging treks in Uttarakhand Himalaya

The Panpatia Pass or Col Glacier trek is renowned as one of the most challenging treks in the Uttarakhand Himalayas, putting trekkers’ stamina and determination to the test. The trail originates from Badrinath in the Garhwal Himalayas and leads to a high-altitude pass at an elevation of 5260 meters, nestled between two unnamed peaks that exceed 5500 meters in height. This less-traveled pass is meant exclusively for experienced trekkers and aspiring mountaineers with prior trekking experience and knowledge of using ice axes, crampons, and roping up procedures.

The trek demands a very high level of fitness, requiring excellent physical and mental endurance. The trail takes trekkers through massive glaciers, crevassed snowfields, rocky moraines, and the expansive 7km-long Panpatia snowfield, providing a challenging yet rewarding experience for ambitious trekkers looking to conquer this epic trek.

Arrive in Joshimath by 7 PM after a drive from Dehradun. Check into a guesthouse or hotel for an overnight stay. Prepare for your next adventure as you rest and rejuvenate in the scenic surroundings.
Drive from Joshimath to Hanuman Chatti, crossing a suspension bridge over the Alaknanda River at Khirao. Camp at a clearing above the Khirao Ganga and Alaknanda confluence after a short walk. Enjoy dinner and retire for the night in tents.
Today, trek to Khirao village after a gradual ascent from the campsite. In summer, villagers tend to terraced farms or move to higher meadows. After a steep climb past the village and grassy slopes, reach your campsite for the night. Enjoy dinner and rest in tents.
A short walk from Shepherd’s Camp leads to the Panpatia Glacier snout, just 10 minutes from the campsite. Set up tents at the Snout Camp and retire for the night, enjoying the serene glacial surroundings.
Today’s trek involves a long uphill walk on a never-ending moraine, offering glimpses of snow patches for varied and easier progress. Spot Chaukhamba for the first time. Set up tents at the moraine camp for the night, enjoy dinner, and rest in tents.
Trek from the moraine camp to the base of Parvati Col, involving a short yet steep walk that brings you near the Panpatia snowfield. Camp just below Parvati Col, enjoy dinner, and retire for the night in tents.
To continue, navigate the steep snow and rock gully using fixed ropes. Enter the pure snow domain, with Chaukhamba rising magnificently. With luck, catch a view of Nanda Devi. After crossing Parvati Col, reach the vast Panpatia snowfield to camp for the night.
Traverse a long, mostly flat path with a short climb to reach Panpatia Col, offering stunning views of mountains, glaciers, and vast snowfields. Set up tents near Sujal Sarovar for an overnight stay. Enjoy dinner and rest for the night.
Today, trek to Kanchni Tal. After passing a small pass above Sujal Sarovar, descend steep snowy slopes and boulder zones to reach Kanchni. The meadow offers views of the Madhmaheshwar Ganga. Camp here for the night, enjoy dinner, and rest in tents.
Trek to Nanu Chatti, taking 3-4 hours to reach Madhmaheshwar Temple beyond oak forests. Follow the paved trail to Ransi village road head, a small summer home settlement for Gaundhar villagers. Enjoy an overnight stay in tents.
Walk to Ransi village along the Madhmaheshwar Temple trail, then drive to Rudraprayag. From there, depart to your next destination, concluding your journey.
